Meindl Footwear Comparison & Buying Guide

Meindl walking and field boots worn outdoors

Meindl footwear buying guide

Choose the right Meindl boots for your terrain

Compare Meindl walking shoes, supportive hill boots and tall field boots by waterproofing, fit, support and intended use.

Quick answer

Choose the Caracas GTX for lighter everyday walks, the Peru GTX for a lower-cut three-season boot, the Bhutan MFS for demanding hill walks, or the Dovre range for a wide-fitting, higher field boot.

Start with where you will wear them

Meindl grades footwear by the terrain and support it is designed to handle. A heavier or taller boot is not automatically better: choose the lowest weight and support that still suits your usual ground and weather.

What does MFS mean?

Meindl’s Memory Foam System uses body heat and pressure to shape the padding around the ankle and other pressure points. It improves comfort and heel security, but the underlying last still needs to suit the width and volume of your foot.

GORE-TEX or leather lined?

Choose a GORE-TEX model for reliable waterproof protection in wet grass, mud and prolonged rain. The leather-lined Borneo 2 MFS is more breathable for drier conditions, but it is not the right choice when a waterproof membrane is essential.

Standard or wide fit?

Meindl footwear is often generous, but the Dovre models are specifically made on Meindl’s wide last. A wide boot should still hold the heel securely; extra space everywhere is not a substitute for the correct foot shape.

Walking boot or field boot?

Walking models prioritise efficient movement over distance. Taller field boots add protection through mud and vegetation but are heavier. Choose the Bhutan, Peru or Burma for regular walking; move to Dovre, Glockner or Stavanger when height and field protection matter more.

Meindl fit and care questions

Should you size up in Meindl boots?

Meindl advises that most customers do not need to size up automatically. Try footwear with the socks you normally use, keep the heel and midfoot secure, and leave enough room for the toes to move without touching the front when walking downhill.

Which Meindl boot is best for wide feet?

The Dovre Pro and Dovre Extreme use Meindl’s dedicated wide-fitting last. For walking rather than field use, the right choice also depends on toe shape, instep volume and heel hold, so a generally roomy boot may not fit every wide foot equally well.

Which Meindl boot is the best all-rounder?

The Bhutan MFS is the strongest all-round hill-walking choice in this range. The Peru GTX is softer and lower for easier routes, while the Dovre models are taller and wider for field use.

How should Meindl leather boots be cared for?

Remove mud after use, let the boots dry naturally away from direct heat, and condition the leather before it becomes dry. Care products may slightly darken waxed or nubuck leather, so test an inconspicuous area first.

Protect the leather and preserve performance

Use Meindl Sportwax on suitable smooth and waxed leather, and replace worn field-boot laces with Meindl 220cm boot laces. Allow wet footwear to dry naturally rather than beside a radiator or fire.
