Ariat Boot Comparison & Fit Guide

Compare Ariat country, walking, Wellington, Western and safety footwear by purpose, protection, fit and construction.

Ariat makes very different boots for very different jobs. A waterproof Wexford boot is designed for versatile everyday country wear, while a Terrain boot adds walking and riding capability. Kelmarsh wellies suit wet, muddy conditions; Ariat Western boots prioritise traditional shape and style; and Ariat work boots provide job-specific protection.

Quick answer Choose the Wexford for a smart waterproof Chelsea boot, Terrain Trek for walking and riding, Kelmarsh for mud and standing water, Heritage R Toe for classic Western styling, Rambler for a relaxed broken-in Western feel, or Groundbreaker where certified workplace protection is required.

Which Ariat boot should you choose?

  • Wexford boots: the smartest waterproof everyday option.
  • Terrain boots: better for longer walks, uneven ground and casual riding.
  • Kelmarsh wellies: easiest to clean after deep mud and wet chores.
  • Western boots: choose primarily by toe profile, width and styling.
  • Work boots: check the individual product’s safety certification before buying.

How should Ariat boots fit?

Fit varies by family. Walking and Chelsea boots should hold the heel securely without compressing the toes. Western boots normally allow slight heel movement when new, while the instep should feel comfortably firm.

On selected men’s models, D is the standard width and EE is the wider option. Do not assume every colour or model offers both widths—check the available variants on the product page.

Waterproof leather or rubber?

Choose a DRYShield™ leather boot such as the Wexford when you want breathable comfort and a smarter appearance. Choose the rubber Kelmarsh for deeper mud, standing water and easier cleaning.

Leather Western boots require appropriate care and should not be treated as waterproof unless the individual product explicitly says so.

Does every Ariat work boot have a safety toe?

No. The Groundbreaker Steel Toe shown here is certified to EN ISO 20345 S3 HRO SRC. Ariat also makes soft-toe work footwear, so always confirm the stated certification for the exact product rather than relying on the word “work”.

Frequently asked questions

Which Ariat boots are best for dog walking?

For everyday paths and mixed town-and-country use, choose the waterproof Ariat Wexford boots. For longer distances and uneven ground, the supportive Ariat Terrain boots are the stronger choice. For deep mud and very wet conditions, choose Kelmarsh wellies.

What is the difference between Heritage R Toe and Rambler boots?

The Heritage R Toe boots have a cleaner, traditional rounded Western profile with leather lining. The Rambler boots have a deliberately distressed, relaxed appearance, an unlined construction and both D and EE width options in the featured style.

Can Terrain Trek boots be used for riding?

Yes. The Terrain Trek boots have a defined riding heel and a slim, stirrup-friendly Duratread™ sole. They are intended for casual riding and outdoor use, rather than replacing a formal tall riding boot.

How should Ariat leather and rubber boots be cared for?

Remove mud promptly and let footwear dry naturally away from direct heat. Use the correct product for smooth leather, suede or rubber; the full range is available in our Ariat care products collection.
